Sunny Side Up by Andy Smith exhibiton preview evening

Andy Smith, Sunny Side Up Exhibition

Last Friday evening we held the private view of our new exhibition, 'Sunny Side Up' by Andy Smith. It's no mean feat filling the entire first floor gallery space, especially for a single artist! We've been selling Andy's work for quite a few years now and he's been involved in the last couple of Christmas Shows so it's great to finally have the space to have a big show of his work. And almost everything was created for this show!

Although the weather wasn't on our side, those who braved the rain were treated to a great show and refreshments including Juiceology juices (who we loved at the ACOFI book tour!).

‘Sunny Side Up’
Exhibition by Andy Smith at Soma Gallery, Bristol
25th June 2011 – 20th August 2011

Private View Friday 24th June 6-9pm

Next Friday we will be hosting the private view for our new exhibition by Andy Smith. Our customers (and those of you reading this!) are invited to this preview for a browse of the work, to meet Andy in person and to have a few drinks and nibbles.

The artwork will be available to view and buy on the website over the weekend for those of you not able to get to Bristol.

Hastings based illustrator Andy Smith studied at Brighton University and the Royal College of Art. When not busy working for clients such as Orange, Nike, McDonalds, The Guardian and Faber and Faber he can be found in his studio by the sea in Hastings printing books and posters which he has exhibited in the UK, France, USA and Australia. Specialising in silkscreen printing Andy’s work combines illustration and typography to create images with humour, energy and optimism, executed with a handmade tactile feel. Illustrating for 12 years, his work has won D&AD, Creative Circle and AOI awards and been featured in numerous books and publications.

His summer show at Soma Gallery in Bristol will include a set of 12 new large artworks, hand screenprinted by Andy and featuring his distinct hand lettering and visuals. They deal with bold statements, strange visitors, warnings from gurus, the thoughts of Captain Scott and other random themes. Accompanying these prints will be an eclectic collection of new 3D arrows and moose heads, totes, stickers and one sad lonely, goldfish.

Artist of the week: Spencer Wilson

With all the events of the last couple of weeks, I've let the Artist of the week feature slide. So here we are back again with Spencer Wilson in the spotlight!

Wish by Spencer Wilson
Wish

Spencer Wilson is a London based illustrator and co-founder of the illustration, design and animation company Peepshow Collective Ltd. He has been working to commission since 1998 in a world of neat piles of mess, coffee cups and ordered chaos.

His work follows this theme with the creation of sketchy ideas and twisted thoughts, carried through into clean vectored, balanced images placed in dynamic flat colour compositions with the occasional introduction of texture. He’s also a father to two fantastic girls who never cease to inspire him.

Spencer has an extensive client base, with examples of his work seen gracing the advertising billboards in London and across Europe, animated on TV screens, popping up on the web, adding a dash of humour to the weekend / daily newspaper supplements, monthly glossies and very rarely hanging in neat, white spaces in frames. Spencer has recently returned to his love of printmaking after a long hiatus, creating simple images on his table top press.

ACOFI at Soma - The Event

A little over a week ago we hosted the Bristol leg of Amelia Gregory's ACOFI book tour. We were joined by two fantastic Bristol based businesses Lahloo Tea and Harts bakery who provided teas and biscuits respectively. Juiceology provided beautiful blended juice drinks and Dr Hauschka provided skincare samples.

Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration

We have had a lovely long relationship with Amelia since we started stocking Amelia's Magazine back in around 2005. We started on issue 3 and I wish I had heard about it sooner as I would have loved to have managed to get a copy of issue 2 which came with a Tatty Devine necklace and a cover designed by Rob Ryan (who we also have a great relationship with and have stocked both for a few years too now).

Amelia's magazine gained a bit of a cult following during it's 10 issue run. Beautifully illustrated and designed as well as being full of top quality content including fashion, art and music, it blew most other publications out of the water. The incredible attention to detail  including glow in the dark covers, scratch n sniff covers, usb sticks full of music, cocktail books and many more extra additions made it incredibly covetable but also incredibly expensive to produce as well as being a huge amount of work. So after 10 issues, Amelia moved into the world of book publishing.

ACOFI is her second title and focusses on ethical fashion. Amelia gave us a talk about her journey from setting up the magazine to the creation of the books, the rise of eco fashion and the importance of social media in promoting yourself.

Amelia's compendium of Fashion Illustration is available on our website here or in our Bristol shop. All the copies we have are signed by Amelia. We also have a few back issues of the fabulous Amelia's Magazine available in the shop.

Two of the illustrators from the book were present at the event. Bex Glover who is shown in the photo above showing her work and Katie Harnett.

We are so grateful to our fantastic sponsors of the day, in particular Kate Gover and her team from Lahloo tea and Laura Hart of Harts Bakers who made the event extra special with their wonderful products.

Lahloo Tea

Lahloo Tea was founded by Kate Gover. This dynamic new company offers tea drinkers a boutique collection of loose-leaf tea from some of the world’s finest small tea gardens. With a little help from two expert importers, Lahloo brings you fairly traded, organic tea direct from small artisan producers.

You can find Lahloo tea sold a couple of doors down from us in Arch House Deli as well as in Chandos Deli's in Bristol. For those of you outside Bristol, you can buy direct from their website www.lahlootea.co.uk or find it stocked in specialist deli's and cafe's.

Harts Bakery

Harts Bakery is run by Laura Hart. Laura has worked in Bristol as a pastry chef and baker for nine years. She has gained a wealth of baking experience working at Quartier Vert, followed by Bordeaux Quay, the Arch House Deli, and the Clifton Lido.

Her bakery and shop is open Monday - Friday and is located in Hampton Lane just off Cotham Hill and close to the Clifton Down shopping centre and station. You can also find her on Saturdays on a stall on Gloucester Road outside Planet Pizza and opposite Bristol North Swimming Baths.

Amelia has also blogged about the event and her review is full of pictures.

The last leg of the tour is at Tatty Devine tomorrow evening. For more information go here.
